To obtain the Master's degree in Psychology (class LM-51) and qualify as a licensed psychologist in Italy, students must meet two requirements:
1. complete a traineeship (referred to as “Tirocinio Pratico Valutativo”, or TPV in Italian; 20 CFU), consisting of activities carried out both in external host institutions (16 CFU, corresponding to 400 hours of training) and within the University (4 CFU). The TPV allows students to engage with professional psychologists working in key areas of (Clinical) Psychology, allowing them to develop competence and autonomy in using essential professional tools.
PLEASE NOTE:
The TPV has also been introduced at the Bachelor’s level, for a total of 10 CFU. Students who obtained their undergraduate degree abroad (i.e., outside the Italian university system) must complete these additional 10 CFU during their Master's program. As a result, the total number of TPV credits will amount to 30 instead of 20. In this case, the number of hours required in external host institutions will increase to 650 hours (i.e., 26 CFU).
2. Successfully pass an oral examination (known as “Prova Pratica Valutativa”, or PPV), conducted in Italian, which confers the qualification to practice as a licensed psychologist in Italy. This oral exam takes place soon before the final examination (thesis defence), and is designed to assess the candidate's professional skills acquired through the traineeship, including their understanding of ethical and deontological principles relevant to the profession.
Only those who pass both the TPV and the PPV are eligible to take the final exam. It is not possible to graduate from this master program without successfully passing the PPV, which is conducted in Italian.
