To obtain the master’s degree in psychology (class LM-51-R) and qualify as a licensed psychologist in Italy, students must meet two requirements:
- Completion of a traineeship (“Tirocinio Pratico Valutativo”, TPV; 20 ECTS), consisting of activities carried out both in external host institutions (16 ECTS, corresponding to 400 hours of supervised training) and within the University (4 ECTS). The TPV enables students to work alongside professional psychologists in core areas of clinical practice, fostering competence and autonomy in the use of essential professional tools.
Please note: The TPV is also required at the bachelor’s level for a total of 10 ECTS. Students who obtained their undergraduate degree abroad (i.e., outside the Italian university system) must complete these additional 10 ECTS during their master’s program. Consequently, their total TPV requirement increases from 20 to 30 ECTS, and the number of hours to be completed in external host institutions rises to 650 hours (i.e., 26 ECTS).
- Successful completion of the oral examination (“Prova Pratica Valutativa”, PPV), conducted in Italian, which confers eligibility to practice as a licensed psychologist in Italy. Held shortly before the final examination (thesis defense), the PPV assesses the professional competencies acquired during the traineeship, including knowledge of ethical and deontological principles relevant to the profession.
Only students who pass both the TPV and the PPV are admitted to the final examination. It is not possible to graduate from this master’s program without successfully passing the PPV, which is conducted in Italian.
